Benefits of Regular Dental Check-Ups

Michael 0

Odds are you don’t read a journal of clinical dentistry to keep up on the latest tips and trends for your oral health. That’s what your dentist is for. Many people, however, neglect their regular dental check-ups and might only see their dentist when they are having a problem. Although this might seem like an acceptable course of action, there are actually many benefits to keeping those regular appointments. They’re for more than just cleaning your teeth.

What Happens

A normal check-up has two parts: the cleaning and the exam. A visit might start with X-rays depending on how long it has been since your last check-up. Typically a dentist will perform X-rays  annually. These pictures help them to detect cavities and other dental issues.

The cleaning is the part most people are familiar with when they go to the dentist. This portion of the exam is when a hygienist will scrape plaque and tartar from your teeth as well as polish them. Removing these substances helps to keep your mouth healthy and prevent cavities or other oral diseases. Next the hygienist will check your gums for swelling or any other signs of gingivitis.

After this process is finished, the dentist will come in and examine your X-rays and your mouth to determine if any areas need to be monitored or treated. If they see a cavity, you will likely need to return to let them fill it.

Dental Hygiene at Home

If you hate fillings and people scraping at your teeth, then there some things you can do at home to maintain your oral health. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing each day can make a huge difference in plaque buildup. Rinsing with a mouthwash can also help to eliminate harmful bacteria in your mouth.
